7.30am: Breakfast with Cruela: "Cow Tongue Tacos Anyone?"

C4P commenter CruelaDev will be up bright and early to prepare breakfast for those guests who would care to join her. Cruela will be following a tried and tested recipe:

1. Simmer the tongue in water to cover until no longer pink, about 50 minutes per pound of tongue. Remove from water and let rest until cool enough to handle. Peel the skin off the tongue, trim the gristle, and cut into bite-size pieces.
2. While the tongue is cooling, combine tomatoes, onion and cilantro in a medium bowl. Mix well and set aside.
3. In large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Cook tongue with salt and pepper until heated through and slightly colored, 5 to 10 minutes. Drain.
4. In a small skillet, heat tortillas 1 minute on each side. To assemble tacos, layer tongue and tomato mixture inside a folded tortilla and sprinkle with lemon juice. Serve immediately.

Slurp!

SWS: She Coulda Been A Contender…. She Coulda Been A Somebody.

[Opens door marked C4P, clicks light on, wipes twelve months of cobwebs and dust from computer keyboard, coughs once and begins to type]

It’s been a year now since Sarah Palin announced her intention to step down as Governor of Alaska…..thereby also signalling the beginning of the end for C4P. For when the website sank without trace, beneath The Rubicon, the day after Palin’s gobsmacker, it’s well known that all the contributors bailed, quick smart.

At the time I recall someone mumbling… half heartedly…. that maybe we should get together again in twelve months’ time, to remember the good old days, for auld lang whatsits.

“Yeah”, “sure”, “whatever” most grunted…. And I suppose I knew there and then that come the contributors’ meet-up on the 4th July 2010 I might be all alone, wondering if any of them would show.

Where’s that guy from New Jersey when you need him, huh? And The Man Known Formerly As Ugafish? What ever happened to Laffer Curve Doug, scary Mel “get of my blog”, and that sinister dude who put together the viral about Mittens… never could remember his name.

And what about Mansour, eh? Somebody said she was offered a job working for the Jay Ramras campaign, over at Pike’s Landing; capitalising on her new boss’s legendary endorsement of C4P :

“these folks from C4P are frightening people….. these are not Alaskans and they’re meddling in Alaskan affairs….. C4P which is a hit team, they’re a bunch of pitbulls who are out of state, they live in the shadows….. they practice shadowy, villainous behaviour…. we don’t know who these people are… this is a rogue group…. they’ve made anti-Semitic remarks, using the word bagels when referring to Jewish people.. which is anti-Semitic in nature…. you non-Alaskan residents have an answer for everything….. you’re spreading hate, you’re spreading hate, you’re using ethnic code words and slurs… you’re a bunch of hit men, a hate squad…. hiding somewhere in the Lower 48 or Australia.”
My hunch is that she went back to being a 15 year old starving artist once the funds from Mr X were pulled. Still brings tears to my eyes thinking about the day they repossessed Obarb 14 and the company goldcard, I can tell ya.

Well, a lot’s happened in the year since Palin sat down and shut up; and it turns out Andy Sullivan was right all along, wasn’t he. For sure, Andrew, it was a national scandal that the lamestream media didn’t investigate things properly after the 2008 campaign.

I mean, which person in his right mind could ever have believed the lunatic conspiracy that those pro-Palin blog psychos all colluded in on her behalf?

Troof is, Andy, even though we blogged about it constantly, none of us was ever really convinced by the claim that Alaska based liberal progressive geriatric gardener Phil Munger was secretly fathering multiple love-children, with anonymous Alaska Bloggers Shannyn Moore, Jeanne Devon, Linda Kellen Biegel …. all funded by the Alaska Democratic Party, but hidden from the public eye in order to secretly turn a red state blue one person at a time.

There’s no doubting that there were babies….spawn of the devil bloggers we called them at the time.. hehheh. How could we ever have known that their real names were Little Leafy Ears, Curly Shell-Like and old Wrinkly Lugs?

We pretended to our readers that we knew they were being hidden somewhere over in Europe and that the most precocious of the children appeared to be writing for that Pink Pig blog, under the pseudonym Patrick von Dachshund.

It wasn’t true.

Whom did we think we were fooling with all those obsessive and baseless allegations, to which the lamestream media just turned a blind eye constantly?

Thankfully, those Alaska Bloggers kept their eyes on the ball, and when the gotcha moment finally arrived for “the woman who could not even stand up to the local bloggers in her state”, it was the spontaneous combustion of that embezzlement iceberg that really began it (POUFFF!), and then there was the whole splitsville ring which sleeps with the fishes debacle, and then she upped and legged it to The Land of the Shining Mountains…. to bag a Big Foot.

And who’da thought those bloggers would uncover Todd holed-up in the Hamptons, building yet another replica of the Wasilla Sports Centre, complete with its own 14 foot fence to keep out his new neighbour… Joe Mcginniss.

Small world.

Yeah, it’s true I was one of those who got caught up in that whole pre-ordering of the-book-she-was-supposed-to- ghost-write-thing. None of us got our money back when they cancelled the 2.7 million copies for which people had already forked out…. and it was a real choker to find that she’d gone rogue with the donations to that there unofficial Alaska Fund Trust, as one of those pro-Atlantic Monthly bloggers said.

Spent it all on tan oil for her legs, and hair replacement when she went bald, again.

It was all so unethical, all so illegal…. as brave citizen watchdog Andree McLeod proved to herself beyond her own reasonable doubt, time and time and time and time and time and time again.

‘n that guy Jesse Smeagol in Anchorage, turns out he and his good buddy My Source were right all along, just as much as Andrew Sullivan ever was.

Well, she sure didn’t figure that those pesky local bloggers would stand up to her. Those ever vigilant, uterus busting bloggers, with their pajama clad Trig troofing, embezzlement icecube, splitsville, leafy-curly-wrinkly eared revelations, really did turn out to be mankind’s last best hope…… with a little help from ole Sully, and that pink Porc auTruffe chick - over there in France, Europe.

The troof shouldn’t be silenced to spare someone.

The scariest thought is that she coulda been a contender…. she coulda been a somebody. If those bloggers hadn’t taken her down she might have had it all by now: the independence, the freedom, the marriage, the multi-million dollar book deal, the block busting tour in a big blue bus, the money in the bank, the contributor gig on Fox news, the speaking engagements, the adulation of millions.

And she could even have been out there helping others to get elected ….. Scourge of the Community Organiser…. the official Mamma Grizzly, Facebook Queen Maker …. Shoot, she could even have been on Oprah, hell yeah.

Just imagine the speeches she might have given if she’d only chosen to make a fight of it when she stepped around the Governor’s desk:

My choice is to take a stand and effect change - not hit our heads against the wall and watch valuable state time and money, millions of your dollars, go down the drain in this new environment. Rather, we know we can effect positive change outside government at this moment in time, on another scale, and actually make a difference for our priorities - and so we will, for Alaskans and for Americans.

Included in the unmitigated troof, the whole troof and nothing but the troof that the mainstream media still refuses to investigate properly is that a year ago she fell for a guy with a sagittal crest, somewhere in Montana, and entered mountain folklore singing "It's new dawn, it's a new day, it's a new life."

Maybe Andy Sullivan'll look into it sometime.

Dragonfly out in the sun, Happy Independence Day.

A Year Ago Today

Let's take a little trip down memory lane...

A year ago today we were going about our business mocking anklebiters, writing letters to Jonah Goldberg, and doing our best to watch the Governor's back.

Then a new thread popped up, shattering the rhythm of our C4P day: Gov Palin to Make Announcement at 3:00.

Something's up. Something big.

Speculation in the ranks:

gardunne63: She's announcing that Piper will be filing an ethics complaint against Ramras? She was really born in Manitoba, Canada mainly surprising her critics that she can find Canada on a map let alone pronounce it correctly. Seriously, all plans I had this afternoon are now shot. Thanks 'Cuda.

lonestar: She will announce Andree McLeod is her new clothing czar and Linda Beagle is her new ethics czar.

R. A. Mansour: She just wants to announce to America that she can still beat Jonah Goldberg's wife at basketball.

As TV pundits began to speculate...

Anne: I think I may hurl. Veep debate nausea coming back...

KentonAK: Does anyone else catch the TREMENDOUS SYMBOLISM of this announcement on JULY 3RD???

(The day before INDEPENDENCE DAY!)

**********Sarah does!******

The first inklings started coming through:

Anne: Yep, CNN is all over the "breaking news: Palin won't run for re-election" segment. Where is the freakin' press conference!?

Rachael: CNN is also a flaming wad of crap. This decision has nothing to do with her thinking she might lose. [As a matter of fact, Dave Dittman had come out with a poll just the day before showing Governor Palin winning re-election hands down.]

The Monster: (The day before INDEPENDENCE DAY!) I was just thinking that. She's declaring independence from the anklebiters.

AmeriCuda: When Pawlenty announced he wasn't running again, one of the crickets in attendance had to report it.

And then, what almost nobody saw coming:

Bestbud: KTUU says Sarah will resign in July!! WOW

We still had not heard a word from the Governor herself. As a result, some were getting extremely perplexed, myself among them:

Doug (formerly DB): If she's resigning in three weeks, that makes no sense to me at all.

Rachael: Honest to God I don't know if I should laugh or cry or vomit.

Mountain Mama: Hiya, Gelston. I'll be first in line for those sedatives, thank you very much. WHAT IS THE DEAL!?

Uffda: I'm going to be sick....My intestines are in knots. Why? Why, why, why? This is so out of the blue, what on earth is happening?

Finally, the networks got the tape. This is a compilation of the key parts of her speech. You can view the unedited version at PalinTV:

Okay, now that we'd heard it from the Governor herself, we were feeling much better, if not actually a little excited:

techno: Romney, Huckabee and Obama just all had heart attacks.

Rachael: Phew. I need a tissue.

Anonymoose: The last time she quit a job -- at the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission -- it was for principled reasons; and the next job she landed was Governor of Alaska. She deserves the trust she asks for.

Huskers-For-Palin: Okay folks, I'm a 43 year old dude who up until 2008 never really got into politics (with the exception of Reagan). After what I heard, I blubbered like a baby. I haven't had this kind of passion in a long, long time. I've had a beer...feeling better now.

And the media? Well, let's just say it was comical watching them fail to comprehend plain English:

A year ago today, there was a tinge of sadness:

And a lot of expectations for the future:

Here were my thoughts after I actually saw her speech and realized that she was not giving up the fight, but rather taking it to a better battlefield:

I believe that Sarah Palin has a true servant's heart, and that servant's heart leads her to want to be wherever she can do the most good. It just so happens that she has done all she can for Alaska, and she can now do more good elsewhere.

Also, I have to say, I love the party that many liberals are throwing. They're sipping their champagne, wearing their little party hats and celebrating the idea that Sarah Palin is finished and done.

They were never more wrong.

They will look back and rue this day. The day they thought they had beaten her was the day that she beat them.

They just don't know it yet.

So, Happy 4th of July to a now very independent Sarah Palin. Enjoy your new-found freedom.

After the C4P editors had taken some time to process the news, Tim Lindell led us in Sarah's footsteps across the Rubicon:

In 49 BC, Julius Caesar led his army across the Rubicon River. As he did so, he reportedly muttered the phrase "Alea iacta est" - "the die is cast". It was the point of no return.

Sarah Palin has crossed the Rubicon today. It's a gamble of incredible proportions. None of us saw it coming, and we're the most dedicated political junkies you will find anywhere. It took our breath away.

My political faith in Governor Palin was shaken today - I'm ashamed to say it, but it happened. So I did what this worldly, secular, guy rarely does unless he wants something - I took a knee and said a prayer.

And guess what - I found my rock. For me, it was an overwhelming feeling that I should look to Exodus, always my favorite book of the Bible. (Maybe it's because The Shawshank Redemption is my favorite movie - yeah, I'm hopelessly corrupted by pop culture.) Wherever it came from, I got out my Old Testament and re-read Exodus.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think Sarah Palin is Moses. But, as with so many things, I found a useful analogy in God's word to clarify my thinking. I won't spin off a full-fledged sermon (will leave that to Pastor Rob, or to RAM, who is so much better than me at spiritual matters). But I did see an analogy. Moses was set loose on the waters, and found by Pharaoh's daughter. And he lived with them, as one of them, until he could no longer abide the evil that he saw. So he slew the overseer and fled into the desert, building a life for himself and his family until it was necessary for him to return to free his people.

Take from that what you will. Castigate me as some kind of holy roller, but I stand by what I say unashamed.

In any case, Palin has crossed the Rubicon and made her stand clear. She gave us a hint before when she said "Politically, if I die, I die." I think this was her equivalent of alea iacta est....

As for me, my feet are wet. Because I just waded across the Rubicon, too.

That was a year ago today.

The day after, Tammy Bruce spoke to a Tea Party in Tucson, Arizona:

I don't know about you, but I feel like I get to celebrate two Independence Days.

Court Smacks Andree McLeod For Frivolous Lawsuit

The anklebiters in Alaska have attacked Sarah Palin on a number of ridiculous grounds, many of which we have chronicled here at C4P. For example, see here and here. One of the more common accusations has been that somehow Governor Palin's reliance on Todd Palin as a close advisor was illegal or unethical. Indeed, one of the memes the LSM made is that Todd Palin was the "shadow Governor" or something simply because he provided input and guidance to his wife. Of course, the same lunatics making the accusation never questioned Hillary Clinton's close advisory relationship with President (and Governor) Clinton, and completely ignores the policy role Michelle Obama currently plays. Indeed the MSM has even gone so far as to say Michelle Obama "will join her husband in a partnership widely expected to transform the public face America presents to the world". As usual logic, decency and common sense are nonexistent on the left, and a recent court ruling confirms that.

The Court's verdict has fully vindicated Todd Palin's role as a close advisor and First Gentleman or, as we've come to know him, First Dude of Alaska. None other than serial ankle-biter Andree McLeod and her left-wing attorney Donald Mitchell (whom the court chastised in subsequent footnotes for multiple rule violations), claimed that by copying Todd Palin in any government related email, the Office of the Governor "waived" the deliberative process privilege and that therefore all the emails should be publicly released.

Not surprisingly, The Court didn't buy this absurd argument and, in meticulously reviewing Alaska law, federal law, and the common law, resoundingly rejected Mitchell and McLeod's meritless arguments. They even went so far as to say that McLeod's team "ignored reality and common sense." Readers here have known for some time that the left in general, and these moronic anklebiters in particular, routinely "ignore reality and common sense". but rarely will you find a published court order confirming that as a matter of law. We will be framing this Court Order at the C4P headquarters, and perhaps selling commemorative coins to mark the occasion. The Court concluded that "common sense and Federal law require finding that Todd Palin could properly have acted as an advisor to the Governor."

How many thousands of dollars did McLeod and Mitchell cause the state to waste defending another frivolous law suit? Will the State of Alaska ask the Court to have the cost it incurred for defending itself against this latest frivolous case reimbursed. It's apparent to any fair minded person that the spouse of the governor historically provides guidance and advice to the governor. Not just Governor Palin's spouse, but the spouses of myriad governors before her, not just in Alaska but all other states as well. This most recent case by the deranged Andree McLeod and her useful idiot lawyer demonstrates exactly what happens when common sense, common decency and common law take a backseat to obsession and blind hatred. Read the entire ruling here.

Call to Action; Serial Bogus Ethics Filers Give Testimony on Ethics?

During the tenure of Governor Palin, a whirlwind of ethics complaints blew into the state of Alaska. Both Andree McLeod and Zane Henning were responsible for filing bogus complaints against her. These were an affront to tax payers and illustrated a complete disregard for the ethics system.

It would only stand to reason now that the state Legislature would take a good look at the system, hear from those who can give insight into how it can be improved, and follow through. Obviously, it would make sense to talk to the administration that has been so adversely affected by those seeking to abuse the ethic rules. Instead, in their hearings, they actually chose to receive testimony from Andree McLeod and Zane Henning, chief abusers of the system.

Lisa Demer of the ADN reports:

A legislative committee on Monday took up ethics issues that erupted during the Palin administration, but it's not clear whether the panel intends to take any action.

Attorney General Dan Sullivan has proposed state rules establishing when it's appropriate for the state to pay for the travel of family members of the governor or lieutenant governor. Another proposal sets out when the state should pay legal bills for state officials defending against ethics complaints.

Former Gov. Sarah Palin was hit with numerous ethics complaints during her 2 1/2 years in office. She said she quit in part because of what she called frivolous ethics complaints and personal legal bills amounting to an estimated $600,000.

Most of the ethics complaints against Palin were dismissed. But she settled one by reimbursing the state more than $8,000 for her children's air travel.

[...]

Oversight comes from the joint House-Senate Administrative Regulation Review Committee, which examines regulations to make sure they are allowed under state law.

The panel agreed to hold a public hearing on the ethics measures after being pushed by Palin critic Andree McLeod. House leaders also requested it, said state Rep. Wes Keller, R-Wasilla, who is the committee chairman.

Under the proposed rules, the state could cover the costs of defending a public official against ethics complaints if the official were exonerated, Assistant Attorney General Judy Bockmon told the committee.

[...]

McLeod, who filed a number of ethics complaints against Palin and her staff, urged the committee to reject the changes.

[...]

The Executive Branch Ethics Act is important, and the attorney general shouldn't be trying to change the law, another Palin critic, Zane Henning, told the committee. The Legislature should make any needed changes, he said.

[...]

The Department of Law has solicited public comment and held a hearing on the ethics changes, Bockmon said. The period for comment has ended and the department must now decide what to do. It could adopt the provisions as is or with minor changes, or let the matter drop with no action.

The committee hasn't yet decided how to proceed, Keller said.

So Andree McLeod and Zane Henning, serial complainants who cost the state thousands of tax payer dollars while they played out their hellish vendetta against Governor Palin, somehow are credible sources of information? These two Palin anklebiters, whose complaints were thrown out one after another, are taken seriously, but the legislature doesn't want to hear from the administration itself regarding how these ethics abuses can be solved? What sense does that make?

Clearly, these two can't spot a real ethics violation if it smacked them in the face, so how does their one-sided testimony equate to anything remotely helpful in bringing about true ethics reform? And why can't the legislators see what is so apparent? Allowing these two characters to have a say in ethics rules is like allowing children to decide their own punishment. Don't tell me the legislators don't recognize this. They make it hard to take them or these hearings seriously. It seems, instead, to be more of the same Juneau dog and pony show.

Perhaps legislators' approach has something to do with the fact that their own ethics laws protect them from frivolous complaints. Perhaps it's due to the fact that if a complaint is leaked to the public in the legislative branch it is automatically dismissed. No wonder Jay Ramras, chair of House Judiciary, could so flippantly scold Governor Palin for wearing an Arctic Cat coat on a cold Alaska day though he ran multiple ads for his Pike's Lodge while serving in the legislature and running for lieutenant governor. Could it not be argued that this was a political use of airtime? Could these ads not be deemed an improper in-kind contribution? Yet when the absurd Arctic Cat ethics complaint was filed, he chastised the governor for wearing a winter coat on a winter day! The hypocrisy is glaring.

We can look the other way, or we can implore legislators to do the right thing. They need to take up this issue, and we need to let them know how we feel about it. Governor Palin made the selfless decision to resign because she could no longer allow the politics of personal destruction being waged against her to continually cost the state thousands of dollars. And will legislators do nothing? Indeed, something needs to be done, and by "something" I don't mean simply hearing one-sided testimony from the anklebiters themselves.

Governor Palin fought against business as usual in the state of Alaska. Failure to act in the best interests of the state she served is unacceptable. The boneheaded decision to hear testimony on ethics from unethical boneheads makes no sense at all.

I urge you all to call and/or email these legislators and respectfully insist that they take action. Your voice does matter. I've included the contact information for you. (All phone numbers: 907 area code)

Ron Devito: MSNBC’s Sarah Palin Investigation Reveals Nothing; Updated

Last night, in an excellent post, Tommy Report discussed the silly "investigation" into Governor Palin's emails by ace MSNBC investigative reporter Bill Dedman. (I know...being "ace" anything at MSNBC is like being chief water boy for the local t-ball team.) TR's post included a full statement by Thomas Van Flein, Governor Palin's attorney. Today Ron Devito at US For Palin takes another look at the faux scandal manufactured by the ratings-challenged MSNBC:

Today’s flavor of leftist manufactured “Sarah Palin scandal” pertains to emails, staff, and Todd Palin’s role as an adviser. None other than MSNBC — renowned for its hatred of all things Palin — did an “investigative piece,” Palin e-mails reveal a powerful ‘first dude’ in an attempt to paint a picture of Governor Palin as a “Nixon-esque” conniver bent on securing personal and political gain at any cost, and using her husband as a “shadow governor.” To build their case, MSNBC secured an archive of state and private emails — some 3,000 pages (Dedman, 2010, ¶2).

Of course, Dedman took issue with Governor Palin’s use of private email accounts, despite the fact that Alaska’s Superior Court on January 22, 2010 ruled that Governor Palin’s use of these accounts was perfectly legal.

[...]

So, what is the major scandal that lurks here? Hint: It does not involve: black bag burglaries, “plumbers,” wiretapping, embezzling, kickbacks, tax evasion, threats, harassment, intimidation, murder, arson, mayhem, buried bodies, drunk driving, sexual indiscretion, or other act of moral turpitude. All of the foregoing — items that are real scandals — have felled politicians of both parties over the past 30 years, but none of that is operative here.

So, what is the big scandal revealed in 3,000 pages of emails? Ladies and gentlemen, there were two major scandals uncovered. Let’s start that drum roll……

▪ Governor Palin wanted Todd to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables for the family and avoid processed foods (Dedman, 2010, ¶19).

▪ Governor Palin, for the first time in four years wanted to carve out two hours to see Juno with Todd and without the children (Dedman, 2010, ¶21).

Tada! Alaska’s chief executive wanted her husband of 20 years and her children to eat healthy foods, and she wanted to spend some time with her husband to watch a movie. This is a scandal?

[...]

Dedman tried to make a scandal out of routine items like electrical circuits in the Governor’s Mansion, and travel to bill signings throughout the article.

“Most horrifically,” Todd Palin was an advisor to Governor Palin. Let’s see….like Hillary Clinton was to her husband? Like politicians’ spouses have been since time immemorial? Yes indeed, Todd was an adviser to his wife Gov. Sarah Palin, who was at the time Alaska’s CEO. Every request that MSNBC tried to scandalize was routine, appropriate, or it was private emails from private accounts about private family matters.

The "expert" Dedman relies on to help him sort through the emails is none other than Andree McLeod, as Devito explains:

Dedman cites Andree McLeod as his subject matter expert on Gov. Palin’s emails throughout this article. McLeod had filed numerous frivolous ethics charges against Governor Palin, all of which were dismissed. Some of the charges filed were duplicates of charges filed by others that had also been dismissed. McLeod had a personal vendetta against Governor Palin, because she was denied a state job. She would routinely stalk Governor Palin, loitering in the lobby of the Anchorage state building and following her to events for the purpose of inquiring about working for the state. On one occasion, she approached Gov. Palin — who was pregnant with Trig at the time — in a hotel lobby. Following Governor Palin’s resignation, McLeod kept the frivolous complaints coming. A member of the State Personnel Board finally had enough of it and told her to “quit your b*tching!”

[...]

Perhaps MSNBC is trying to do what Jerry Seinfeld could not do for his pilot — a show about nothing.

Serial Anklebiter Refuses to Let Go

Serial anklebiter Andree McLeod plans to ask an Alaska judge to reconsider his ruling that "state law doesn't forbid the use of private e-mail accounts to conduct state business," according to the Associated Press. Her attorney claims he might take the case all the way to the Alaska Supreme Court.

This comes after an August 2009 ruling by Superior Court Judge Jack W. Smith that "there is no provision in Alaska state law that prohibits the use of private e-mail accounts when conducting state business," and Friday's ruling by Superior Court Judge Patrick McKay. Judge McKay's ruling...

... among other things, [said] that "not all emails relating to state business are necessarily public records, and that the "use of private email accounts to conduct state business does not -- in and of itself -- violate state law."

McLeod, as you may recall, has spent the last few years filing frivolous ethics complaints, deluging the Alaska state government with FOIA requests that don't actually provide useful information to the public, melting down in public, wasting taxpayers' money, and obsessing over Sarah Palin. The Associated Press describes her as an "activist". That's not activism, AP, that's anklebiting.

Daniel summed things up about McLeod back in August:

You may recall that Andree McLeod was denied a position in Governor Palin's administration. Apparently she took this rejection as an impetus to file numerous frivolous ethics complaints and the above mentioned lawsuit against the governor and her administration. The outcome of this lawsuit follows the same pattern as her ethics complaints: McLeod publicizes her complaints with great fanfare, and then they are summarily dismissed.

Get a real job, Ms. McLeod.

Skinny White Sunday: “I Keep My Word.”

“If that man, with that agenda, in these times, could be elected in that state, then any Republican can run anywhere, and every Democrat has to be worried.” Brit Hume

Good morning,

Whilst it has become abundantly clear just why contributor Doug Brady needs blackened windows in his company SUV, analysis of Scott Brown’s Massachusetts Miracle victory mid-week seems incomplete without some consideration of the part played by the fluorescent, lime-green, polyester leisure suit which Doug wore throughout the special election day.

Dubbed ever after il vestito fortunato, it’s now established as a citric C4P talisman, linked inextricably to expectation of Republican resurgence in 2010: “If he wears it, we will win.”

Please join me in urging Doug to “Go Lime!” for our coverage of all this year’s significant electoral events.

You know, of course, that this correspondent’s role on a Sunday morning is to offer some sort of reflection on the events of the past seven days. Quickly skirting around the fact that the word “backasswards” has just leapt to mind, let me tell you that after a review of all last week’s posts, and the thousands of comments readers lodged, my impressions are twofold.

Firstly, that amongst its commenters C4P hosts more than its fair share of former State Governors, ex-Vice Presidential candidates, advisers to potential Presidential nominees, Rubicon crossing day trippers, C4PINOs, and kwazy curmudgeons...

... none of whom is reluctant to impart the wisdom surely borne of their experience as a former State Governor, a Vice Presidential candidate, an adviser to potential Presidential nominees, a Rubicon crossing day tripper, a C4PINO, or a kwazy curmudgeon, if some of last week’s comments are to be believed.

Reader hrh gauged the situation astutely,“We've been infected by the deadly virus of "Sarah should do" ..."Why isn't Sarah doing?"

The differential diagnosis would appear to be driven by the following presenting symptoms:

She needs to... Sarah needs to... Palin needs to... Sarah Palin needs to... Gov Palin needs to... Governor Palin needs to... Gov Sarah Palin needs to... Governor Sarah Palin needs to... Former Governor Sarah Palin needs to... and I didn’t like her hair.

Secondly, it’s apparent that there are others who are more inclined to first ask of themselves “have any of us had the political success of Sarah Palin?”, others whose steadfast faith in having forged The Rubicon extends to much more than passing interest in the sight-seeing highlights of the new landscape, whose response is more than a frivolous toe dip and giddy retreat.

Beehive: I too have been a little put off and quite frankly at times, ticked off by some of the comments made here the last couple of weeks... I am so sick of hearing about what the Guv should do and what she shouldn’t do.

She doesn’t read the right books. She isn’t serious about politics. She isn’t doing any prep work on policy. She is not talking to the right people. She isn’t networking with the right people. She is making horrible mistakes. She speaks too fast. She speaks too slowly. She shouldn’t be a contributor on Fox. She shouldn’t go to that event. She better get her act together. Oh and I loved this one. As one commentator said “The Gov better shape up before it's too late. Someone in her camp needs to knock some sense into her.” Are you kidding me? […]

The nitpicking has become overboard and annoying. Some people think they should be involved in every decision she makes. And by heck if she doesn’t do what they think she should do, they are convinced she is finished. She is making a critical mistake. She isn’t following their advice so she is wrong. […]

This lady has been in politics for 16-17 years. She has done incredibly well for herself. She has been successful and continues to be successful to this day. She knows what she is doing. After all, it is her life.

Lynda: When we crossed The Rubicon with her ....we told her we would stand with her […] but no one stood taller than Governor Palin...no one was able to tell her to sit down and shout up on health care, Cap and Trade...no one has spoken louder for the common American...no voice heard louder as freedoms were being lost...no heart gave more...so stand tall and remember you crossed The Rubicon with her...

gelston tkia They say they crossed The Rubicon. They say they love everything about her. And night after night people question her motives. Give "new user" credit. He called out people here for their pessimism and their continual viewing of the cup being half empty. I will not criticize Sarah… She is a brilliant person, a good judge of politics and has good timing. I support her...

PALINISM TO PONDER:

”The special election yesterday in Massachusetts was truly amazing. It is a clear indication of things to come and a demonstration of the momentum we all share in the fight for the values and policies that will get our country back to work. The commonsense conservative principles of liberty and fiscal responsibility are on the rise, and that's why I'm going out and campaigning as hard as I can to make a difference. I can't wait to join all of you in supporting these great candidates and many more over the coming months.”

ON THE CBS POLL (see here)

Section 9: "Oh, and let's be clear. Palin would be in second place to Himmler in a CBS poll."

Ted Togerson: "She's got a 100% approval rating in the Ted Torgerson poll. It's the 522d day in a row Ms. Palin has scored 100% approval."

Kjanlady: "Personally, I wouldn't care what any Lame Stream media poll had to say.......I'd be perfectly happy to look at selling over 2 million books in three months and having thousands of people stand in line for long, long hours in cold and snow and rain just to get a handshake and a smile and a couple of words, invitations by businesses and local governments to speak, millions of viewers watching every interview and television appearance, over a million Facebook friends with the numbers continuing to grow every day, and seeing, feeling and hearing the current political pulse in American........so a bad CBS poll comes out........in Sarah's world would you expect anything else? It's irrevelant."

And a touch of AllahPundit to keep the AgedPundit happy: “Does anyone seriously believe that only 43 percent of Republicans have a favorable view of Sarahcuda? Gallup polled that question in July, less than two weeks after she resigned as governor — probably the nadir of her popularity — and found 72 percent favorables among Republicans. A CNN poll last month found her favorables at 46 percent overall without offering a partisan breakdown, but given intense Democratic opposition to her, Republican support must be in the vicinity of 75-80 percent. At Thanksgiving, she was pulling 68 percent favorables among Iowa Republicans. After the Fox gig and the book tour, we’re supposed to believe that she’s not even at 50 percent among Republicans nationwide? Please.”

Techno: “... any assertion that Sarah is a RINO is patently false. You cannot be a passionate pro-life supporter, a person who does not hide her faith in God, be such a strong advocate for the American soldier, demonstrate a fiscal conservative bent while running the Alaskan government, favor capital punishment, do not subscribe to 100% man-made global warming, believe in free market principles for healthcare, promote the benefits of the free enterprise system, and stand behind the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution if you are not a conservative.”

DoingTheDeal: “Look... if this becomes a situation where it is purity that matters, then this movement is dead. Best immediate example? Brown. He is not a really right conservative... he could be characterized as a RINO... yet, everyone out there, be it Tea Party, Conservative, all of us... we all wanted him to win. So, in certain circumstances and in certain situations, purity is not the only factor. John McCain has influence in the Republican party […] If there are supporters of Sarah Palin who are so weasily and would subject everything she does to some sort of hard line litmus test, then I would have to question their commitment... What is this called... it is called POLITICS. How far do you think Sarah would go in politics if she does not build alliances and a network in Washington? Who would work with her if she kicked McCain to the curb? Do people really think ONE PERSON runs this country? There are thousands of them... a small number are visible and many are not. McCain brings her his Washington savvy and connections... think what you want of him, but he is a powerful Senator. Did you notice who went to see him first... a guy named Brown.”

The 'Palin = racist' smear

It's been an eventful few weeks. While ordinary Americans camped out overnight in the freezing cold for a place in line at her book tour stops, liberal America has been busy throwing whatever dirt it could find at the one person they fear could derail the Obama project in 2012. Andrew Sullivan went into a Trigtruther spasm with Joy Behar, and Palin-stalker Joe McGinniss tried to get her convicted for using a private jet to fly from Florida to Washington. Even Andree McLeod chipped in by filing another handful of ethics complaints.

The race hustlers were at it too. Since the election of Barack Obama, America is supposed to be a post-racial country, but that didn't stop them from twisting a seemingly innocent statement by Chuck Heath about his daughter's time in Hawaii and presenting it as evidence that the Governor was somehow deeply racist. Earl Ofari Hutchinson, for example, used his platform on the Huffington Post to convict her of "an uncomfortable racism".

For those of you who don't know him: Hutchinson has form on Palin-bashing. He's the same guy who tried to stir up the "Palin didn't want to hire African Americans" story during last year's election campaign. A bogus claim, as the Governor's spokeswoman explained at the time:

Sharon Leighow, communications spokesperson in the Alaska governor’s office, disputed the allegation. She said that Palin’s press secretary was part African-American and that two of her senior advisors were Filipino and Korean. Leighow was also adamant that Palin did not hire staff persons based on color, but solely on talent and skill. As she put it, “Governor Palin is totally color-blind.”

During that same period, Hutchinson also dismissed Todd Palin as "no poster boy for Yup'ik Eskimo's or other Native Alaskans" - an echo of the infamous 'Palin's greatest hypocrisy is in her pretense that she's a woman' statement by militant feminist Wendy Doniger.

Now he's at it again, suggesting that Palin transferred from Hawaii to Idaho because unlike the multicultural Aloha State, Idaho is "mostly white, rural, hardline conservative... a fertile nesting ground for an assorted array of kooky, far out racist paramilitary groups."

Whatever.

I'm going to make a radical suggestion here: let's look at what the Governor herself has to say about this episode. We turn to Going Rogue, page 42:

I kicked off college by taking a semester to thaw out; along with Tilly and two other girlfriends, we flew to Hawaii for our freshman year of college. Our intention was to play basketball there, but we made it to only a few tryouts and then decided we’d better concentrate on our studies . . . and the beach. It turned out that Hawaii was a little too perfect. Perpetual sunshine isn’t necessarily conducive to serious academics for eighteen-year-old Alaska girls. Besides, we were homesick for mountains, cooler seasons, and even snow. After that first semester, we realized we’d better transfer back to something closer to our own reality so we could actually earn our degrees.

Tilly and I packed up for a more conventional and affordable campus, choosing Idaho because it was much like Alaska yet still let us be “Outside” (Alaskans’ alternate term for the Lower 48).

Basically, Palin says she couldn't really afford life on the beach, and she was homesick - homesick for the mountains, and for the cooler Alaska clime. By the way, that's the same explanation given by the Governor's friend mentioned in the quote above, Kim 'Tilly' Ketchum, in a 2008 interview with the LA Times:

"When you're used to having some cooler weather, you get tired of the heat," Ketchum said. "We went one semester there before we realized we needed to go someplace else."

They discovered to their shock and amazement that they were cold climate people who couldn't really handle the sunshine, and decided to transfer to northern, mountainous Idaho. Big deal, huh?

Obviously, this doesn't stop Hutchinson from laying out a series of racism charges, some all too familiar (the 'Gov. Palin didn't want to hire African-Americans' canard, and the 'Palin's white support base is a bastion of latent racism' meme that Chris Matthews has been promoting during the book tour), some completely bizarre. He suggests, for example, that during the campaign both Palin and her office were "mute" on a number of racist emails sent by Alaska state employees. Could that be because the emails in question weren't actually sent until after the election? Sure seems a reasonable explanation to me. Palin's spokesman Bill McAllister did comment on the emails, by the way, stating that "this is a confidential personnel and disciplinary matter that has nothing to do with the governor's office."

Enough already with the race hustling. Palin's words and actions speak for themselves. She hired African-Americans and Asian-Americans not because of some politically correct urge to fill an Earl Ofari Hutchinson approved quota but because they were simply the best people for the job. She also married a man who is half Yupik eskimo. In her book, she proudly speaks of her daughters as the next in line of a series of "beautiful Yupik women". It may not be enough to convince Hutchinson, but it's enough for normal, sane Americans to see that these "Palin = racist" stories are just a bunch of politically motivated baloney.

Obsessed Anklebiter Files Another Frivolous Ethics Complaint

During an interview with Greta Van Susteren last month, Governor Palin discussed some of the reasons behind her resignation:

Because it was the best thing for the state of Alaska to be able to progress the conservative agenda up there without the distraction that the new normal in Alaskan politics had become where every time I turned around, there was a lawsuit or frivolous ethics violation charge.

And that was prohibiting my administration from doing the work for the people. It was costing the state millions of dollars, thousands of staff hours to fight these frivolous, adversarial, opposition-researcher efforts that were thrown at my administration while I was there.

And I was not going to run again for governor, so instead of hunkering down, quitting, basically, as a governor by sitting behind my desk and not doing anything, not speaking out for fear of having another ethics violation charge, I said no. They're not going to win and we're going to get out there and fight harder for Alaskans, fight harder to Americans by handing the reins over to our lieutenant governor for my last year in office. He'll progress the agenda. I will get out there and fight even harder.

Andree McLeod and her anklebiting allies continue to prove Governor Palin correct.

The Anchorage Daily News reports that McLeod has filed another baseless ethics complaint against Governor Palin. This comes on the heels of a complaint McLeod just filed against some of Governor Palin's former staffers.

Governor Palin's personal attorney, Thomas Van Flein, responded to a previous frivolous complaint filed by McLeod:

This complainant is known to the Administration as a disgruntled patronage job applicant. What is further obvious is that the ethics process continues to be misused for improper purposes, the law mandating confidentiality continues to be violated, and the state will continue to spend money reviewing these types of complaints, with no public good resulting.

Apparently, McLeod took the rejection of her job application as an impetus to file numerous frivolous ethics complaints against the governor and her administration. And as Thomas Van Flein points out, she does so unethically.

McLeod's latest complaint is based on the false premise that the Alaska Fund Trust, a legal fund set up by Kristan Cole to help pay Governor Palin's and some of her former staffers legal debt (incurred fighting anklebiters such as McLeod), was found to be unethical. No such determination has been made, and only the Personnel Board can make that call.

McLeod based her latest complaint on Democrat investigator Thomas Daniel's preliminary report, which was illegally leaked in July. This preliminary report was the first step in a long process. It's also important to note that Daniel found no violation of the Ethics Act, because Governor Palin didn't remove a single penny from the legal defense fund. How can she be in violation of the Ethics Act for something she hasn’t even done yet? She can't.

This latest complaint will surely end in the same manner as McLeod's previous complaints: dismissal. But not after great expense to the citizens of Alaska and to Governor Palin personally. Many people in the lower 48 are unaware of the unique situation in Alaska that allows anybody to file any ethics complaint for any reason at no cost to themselves, while the governor has to personally incur the legal costs to defend him or herself. Kristan Cole explained the situation in an earlier press release:

There is a loophole in Alaska law. Alaskans can file frivolous complaints against the Governor - violate the law and alert the media they are doing so, all the complaints can be dismissed and yet the Governor has to personally pay for representation. Legislators covered themselves with a law that warrants automatic dismissal of a complaint if it is leaked to the public.

Alaska Attorney General Dan Sullivan has recognized this problem, and we wish him well in his efforts to rectify it.

When Van Susteren asked how Palin would able to deal with these anklebiters on a national scale if she had such trouble with them in Alaska, Governor Palin explained the difference:

PALIN: Is not the same scale, because in Alaska our administration is set up a little bit differently than anywhere else you're going to find in the country or the federal government where the governor is not protected by the department of law when these frivolous ethics violations charges are filed against you. I have to pay personally for the defense, and I am still paying personally for the defense of all the frivolity.

Those charges filed by fake people -- a fake British soap opera actress filed something against me and I am still paying the bill. I am still paying the bill to defend myself against stupid things like that.

That is not going to happen elsewhere because, again, more and more people are realizing that things like that that keep good people away from politics -- people are expecting that kind of change, the ethics reform so that those kinds of actions can't prohibit someone from wanting to serve for the right reasons.

And I do want to serve for the right reasons. I do not know what position it will be, but I will be out there fighting hard, working for everyday, common sense Americans who are sick of things that are going on in the country that really are turning government away from them.

It's becoming more and more, Greta, where the American people are feeling more that they are having to work for the government rather than the government working for them. I want to turn that around in whatever position I can.

Since her political opponents know they can't win on the merit of this ridiculous complaint, they are predictably portraying her as a greedy millionaire who's out to get as much money as she can from her supporters. Nothing could be further from the truth. One of the main purposes of the legal fund is to aid her staff with their legal debt, as well. From the Alaska Fund Trust website (emphasis added):

The Trust Fund is being created to assist the Governor, her family, and staff in paying legal expenses and costs incurred from previous investigations as well as future complaints filed. Her staff is similarly being targeted by these complaints and has also incurred and is incurring significant costs.

As noted above, her former staff members are still being attacked with frivolous ethics complaints as a result of their service in Governor Palin's administration. They have to pay for the legal costs associated with these bogus complaints out of their own pockets. This legal fund was meant to help them as well, but that won't stop Governor Palin's opponents from making fools of themselves in the hopes of damaging her.

Palin Vindicated Again: APOC Rules Disclosures Compliant With State Law

Yesterday, the Alaska Public Offices Commission (APOC) "unanimously ruled in favor of Governor Palin and concluded that Governor Sarah Palin's APOC disclosures were compliant with state law and rejected the assertion that the disclosure information about the Arctic Cat sponsorship for Todd Palin was insufficient," according to a press release from Palin's attorney Thomas Van Flein.

The ADN's story on this is here. It does not have a prominent place on their home page like so many of the ethics related stories did when the complaints were filed. Strange.

You can find background on this here and here, but to sum it up:

On her [2008] financial disclosure, Governor Palin revealed that her husband Todd, who is a sponsored snowmachine racer, had received a unspecified discount from his sponsor on the machines he uses for racing. Ethics anklebiters Linda Kellen Biegel and Andree McLeod pestered the Alaska Public Offices Commission to ask Governor Palin to specify the exact amount of the discount.

Linda Kellen Biegel's assertion to APOC that the disclosures about Todd Palin's Arctic Cat sponsorship were insufficient followed on the heels of her infamous Arctic Cat jacket ethics complaint. Van Flein points out in his press release that "[t]hat complaint was also dismissed as meritless."

Fact-Checking the "Fact-Checkers"

File this one under "Quit Making Stuff Up." It took us all day, but we assembled the definitive debunking of the 11 Associated Press "fact-checkers." Might we suggest a new profession for these folks?

As the always brilliant Mark Steyn pointed out:

That's 11 writers for a 695-word report. What on? Obamacare? The Iranian nuke program? The upcoming trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed?

No, the Associated Press assigned 11 writers to "fact-check" Sarah Palin's new book...

Hey, don't be too hard on the AP. CNN is also into fact-checking... SNL skits that are "mean" to Obama.

Here's some real fact-checking. Fasten your seat belts...

On Governor Palin’s 2006 Campaign Financing

AP “FACTS”: “Of the roughly $1.3 million she raised for her primary and general election campaigns for governor, more than half came from people and political action committees giving at least $500, according to an AP analysis of her campaign finance reports. The maximum that individual donors could give was $1,000; $2,000 for a PAC.

Of the rest, about $76,000 came from Republican Party committees.”

THE TRUTH: Had the AP looked more closely at those “Republican Party” contributions, it might have discovered that most of the money came from eight different Alaska Republican women’s clubs – in other words, grassroots donors. The Republican women’s groups conduct year-round grassroots fundraising, from monthly luncheons to garage sales, and it was completely understandable that they would support a Republican woman gubernatorial candidate.

The Alaska Federation of Republican Women and seven different state women’s clubs (in Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Kenai, Mat-Su, Fairbanks, and two in Anchorage) contributed $44,500 total. The remainder of the AP’s quoted $76,000 was money returned to the party chairman, contributions from district Republican organizations, and $20,000 from “in-kind” contributions/support from the state party.

The Governor’s campaign filed 31 financial reports with the Alaska Public Office Commission – all accurate and on time. It’s telling that the AP has the time to pour through tens of thousands of individual transactions line by line in the various reports, but fails to note these facts.

On Governor Palin’s Position on Bailouts and the Stimulus

AP “FACTS”: “Palin is blurring the lines between Obama’s stimulus plan — a $787 billion package of tax cuts, state aid, social programs and government contracts — and the federal bailout that Republican presidential candidate John McCain voted for and President George W. Bush signed.

Palin’s views on bailouts appeared to evolve as McCain’s vice presidential running mate. In September 2008, she said ‘taxpayers cannot be looked to as the bailout, as the solution, to the problems on Wall Street.’ A week later, she said ‘ultimately what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy.’

During the vice presidential debate in October, Palin praised McCain for being ‘instrumental in bringing folks together’ to pass the $700 billion bailout. After that, she said ‘it is a time of crisis and government did have to step in.'”

THE TRUTH: Apparently she is being slammed for supporting something that most people supported at the time because we were all told by almost every economist that if we didn't support it the sky would fall and the country would look like that 2012 movie trailer. Oh yeah, and she was McCain's running mate at the time too -- would have been just ducky to have his VP on TV saying, "Maverick Two disapproves of what Maverick One is supporting."

As for the stimulus, Governor Palin has consistently voiced her disapproval of the "porkulus" and she got hammered relentlessly for turning down stimulus dollars. Her veto of those dollars was eventually overturned by the legislature. She took a principled stance all along, and no one can re-write history on that.

In regards to bailouts after TARP, this is what Governor Palin told Wolf Blitzer on November 14, 2008:

“…the federal government must play an appropriate role in shoring up some of these industries that are hurting and will ultimately hurt our entire economy and the world’s economy if there aren’t some better decisions being made. But we also have to start shifting some debate here in our country and start talking about personal responsibility and responsibility of management in some of these corporations and companies so that from henceforth it’s not assumed that the federal government is going to be bailing out everybody who is going to soon line up, Wolf, for more taxpayer assistance.”

On Governor Palin’s Assertion that Reagan Faced A Worse Recession and Reagan’s Prescription for Getting Out of Recession

AP “FACTS”: “The estate tax, which some call the death tax, was not repealed under Reagan and capital gains taxes are lower now than when Reagan was president.

Economists overwhelmingly say the current recession is far worse. The recession Reagan faced lasted for 16 months; this one is in its 23rd month. The recession of the early 1980s did not have a financial meltdown. Unemployment peaked at 10.8 percent, worse than the October 2009 high of 10.2 percent, but the jobless rate is still expected to climb.”

THE TRUTH: According to Richard Rahn, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and chairman of the Institute for Global Economic Growth, “President Reagan inherited an economic situation even worse than the one President Obama has. When Reagan took office, the economy had been in recession for about a year, the unemployment rate was almost identical to today’s, but the labor force participation rate was smaller, and inflation was out of control.”

Mr. Rahn has also noted: “Both President Reagan and President Obama inherited an economy suffering from a year of no growth, along with rising unemployment. (The numbers are almost identical.) But Mr. Reagan faced a far direr situation in that inflation was in the double digits and the prime interest rate was at 20 percent. In contrast, Mr. Obama inherited an economy in which inflation was falling (in fact, inflation has been close to zero for this year) and interest rates were very low.”

The unemployment rate in November 1982 was 10.8%. Our current unemployment rate is 10.2%.

The first quarter of 1982 was the worst of the Reagan recession as the economy shrank 6.4%. So far, the economy has shrunk 6.3% in the fourth quarter of 2008 and 5.7% in the first quarter of 2009.

Governor Palin believes in Reagan’s supply side policies of cutting taxes and reining in spending. She never said anything about Reagan and the death tax. She was speaking about solutions to today’s economic troubles using the supply side lessons of the Reagan years.

On Governor Palin’s Natural Gas Pipeline (AGIA)

AP “FACT”: “Palin characterized the pipeline deal the same way before an AP investigation found her team crafted terms that favored only a few independent pipeline companies and ultimately benefited a company with ties to her administration, TransCanada Corp. Despite promises and legal guidance not to talk directly with potential bidders during the process, Palin had meetings or phone calls with nearly every major candidate, including TransCanada.”

THE TRUTH: This AP story from the last election was completely debunked by Alaska media and rightfully referred to as a “hit piece” by a Democrat lawmaker who supported the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act (AGIA). AGIA was a bi-partisan effort that passed by a 58-1 vote. It was open, transparent, and the guidelines were very clear.

On Governor Palin’s Administration

AP “FACT”: “Palin ignores her own ‘revolving door’ issue in office; the leader of her own pipeline team was a former lobbyist for a subsidiary of TransCanada, the company that ended up winning the rights to build the pipeline.”

THE TRUTH: Many of the Governor's gasline team drew upon private sector experiences to bring great insight to their roles in government – whether through economic, legal or development issues. The suggestion here is that the previous jobs held by the Governor's staff influenced decisions. They did not. And in fact the Governor and her gasline team ensured a thoroughly objective process by providing researched recommendations made with public input while leaving all decisions in the hands of the legislature. Those decisions were overwhelmingly approved.

Additionally, the Governor personally witnessed from the previous administration the dangerous pattern of having state employees go immediately from handling state negotiations into private sector jobs concerning the same subjects, and she moved to put an end to that practice among staff, including those who worked on the gasline.

On Governor Palin’s Days on the Wasilla City Council

AP “FACT”: “As Wasilla mayor, Palin pressed for a special zoning exception so she could sell her family’s $327,000 house, then did not keep a promise to remove a potential fire hazard on the property.

She asked the city council to loosen rules for snow machine races when she and her husband owned a snow machine store, and cast a tie-breaking vote to exempt taxes on aircraft when her father-in-law owned one. But she stepped away from the table in 1997 when the council considered a grant for the Iron Dog snow machine race in which her husband competes.”

THE TRUTH: When the Palins purchased their prior home in Wasilla, it was already in violation of the “special zoning” rule. Such rules have always been only loosely enforced in Alaska. The home wasn’t in violation of any zoning regulation when it was originally built, but subsequent construction around it changed that. The Palins applied for a setback variance in order to sell their home. This is very common in Wasilla and elsewhere. There was nothing at all out of the ordinary about it, and it certainly did not involve any favoritism. The “potential fire hazard” in question was a carport that the Palins offered to tear down, but the new owner wanted it left alone.

Todd Palin’s old snowmachine store was located in Big Lake, which is 20 miles outside of the Wasilla city limits. Governor Palin’s father-in-law lives in Dillingham, which is about 450 miles away from Wasilla. The plane in question was not even registered in his name.

On Obama’s Cap-and-Tax Plan

AP “FACT”: “She correctly quotes a comment attributed to Obama in January 2008, when he told San Francisco Chronicle editors that under his cap-and-trade climate proposal, ‘electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket’ as utilities are forced to retrofit coal burning power plants to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

Obama has argued since then that climate legislation can blunt the cost to consumers. Democratic legislation now before Congress calls for a variety of measures aimed at mitigating consumer costs. Several studies predict average household costs probably would be $100 to $145 a year.”

THE TRUTH: As even the AP notes, Governor Palin correctly quoted Obama’s statement that “electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

And despite how the AP would like to spin it, the Waxman-Markey Cap-and-Trade Bill would make prices skyrocket. As Ben Lieberman of the Heritage Foundation notes:

“…the higher energy costs kick in as soon as the bill's provisions take effect in 2012. For a household of four, energy costs go up $436 that year, and they eventually reach $1,241 in 2035 and average $829 annually over that span. Electricity costs go up 90 percent by 2035, gasoline by 58 percent, and natural gas by 55 percent by 2035. The cumulative higher energy costs for a family of four by then will be nearly $20,000.

But direct energy costs are only part of the consumer impact. Nearly everything goes up, since higher energy costs raise production costs. If you look at the total cost of Waxman-Markey, it works out to an average of $2,979 annually from 2012-2035 for a household of four. By 2035 alone, the total cost is over $4,600.”

On the Exxon Valdez Decision

AP “FACT”: “That response is at odds with her reaction at the time to the ruling, which resolved the long-running case by reducing punitive damages for victims to $500 million from $2.5 billion. Environmentalists and plaintiffs’ lawyers decried the ruling as a slap at the victims and Palin herself said she was ‘extremely disappointed.’ She said the justices had gutted a jury decision favoring higher damage awards, the Anchorage Daily News reported. ‘It’s tragic that so many Alaska fishermen and their families have had their lives put on hold waiting for this decision,’ she said, noting many had died ‘while waiting for justice.’”

THE TRUTH: Governor Palin writes in her book: “As governor I directed our attorney general to file an amicus brief on behalf of plaintiffs in the case, and, thanks to Alaska’s able attorneys arguing in front of the highest court in our land, in 2008 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the people. Finally, Alaskans could recover some of their losses.”

That is correct. Alaskans were able to recover some of their losses. However, it was also a tragedy of delayed justice. Alaskans had waited for nearly 20 years, and the Court reduced the amount of punitive damages for the victims.

Governor Palin voiced her support for the $2.5 billion in punitive damages in a press conference with the victims of the Exxon Valdez spill the day before oral arguments were heard. Naturally, she was disappointed that the Court reduced the amount to $500 million – which was especially painful coming as it did after many years of litigation in which some of the victims passed away without ever receiving justice. Even after the Court gutted the punitive damages award, Exxon argued that they shouldn’t have to pay interest on it.

However, it is a matter of record that the Supreme Court did, in fact, rule “in favor of the people.” The “disappointment” was in the reduction of the award and in the delay in justice.

Governor Palin’s immediate reaction to the decision expressed this frustration and disappointment. She said: “I am extremely disappointed with today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. While the decision brings some degree of closure to Alaskans suffering from 19 years of litigation and delay, the Court gutted the jury’s decision on punitive damages. It is tragic that so many Alaska fishermen and their families have had their lives put on hold waiting for this decision. My heart goes out to those affected, especially the families of the thousands of Alaskans who passed away while waiting for justice.”

On Alaska’s Earmarks

AP “FACT”: “Alaska is also one of the states most dependent on federal subsidies, receiving much more assistance from Washington than it pays in federal taxes. A study for the nonpartisan Tax Foundation found that in 2005, the state received $1.84 for every dollar it sent to Washington.”

THE TRUTH: There is no question that as a very young state Alaska requires more help with infrastructure funding to catch up with the rest of the Lower 48. However, Governor Palin was not governor in 2005. As governor, she reduced Alaska’s earmark requests by nearly 85%.

On Governor Palin’s Frugality in Her Personal Expenses While in Office

AP “FACTS”: “Although travel records indicate [Governor Palin] usually opted for less-pricey hotels while governor, Palin and daughter Bristol stayed five days and four nights at the $707.29-per-night Essex House luxury hotel (robes and slippers come standard) overlooking New York City’s Central Park for a five-hour women’s leadership conference in October 2007. With air fare, the cost to Alaska was well over $3,000. Event organizers said Palin asked if she could bring her daughter. The governor billed her state more than $20,000 for her children’s travel, including to events where they had not been invited, and in some cases later amended expense reports to specify that they had been on official business.”

THE TRUTH: The AP proves Governor Palin’s point by noting that she “usually opted for less-pricey hotels.”

The First Family’s travel was processed by the Administrative Services Department, whose director served under the previous governor. Governor Palin followed the same protocol that past governors had followed. The one obvious difference, however, is that Governor Palin and her family spent less than her two predecessors. In fact, she spent over $913,000 less on personal expenses in her first two years than former Governor Frank Murkowski did his last two years.

“Amending” the reports was not done to hide anything. It was standard practice for Governor Palin’s security personnel to submit the initial trip requests with the basic details of the trip to the Administrative Services Department. Later, the rest of the trip details would be added by the Governor’s personal staff.

And, by the way, perhaps someone could tell us how to find a cheap and safe hotel in New York City. And does anyone think she took a 9 hour flight to the east coast and didn't do any other business. Riiight. Maybe we can ask Andree McLeod for the Governor's calendar for that day, seeing as how Andree wasted hundreds of hours of work time of state personnel for her FOIA requests of the Governor's emails, calendars, and, ah... we don't know... Piper's finger paintings.

The simple fact is that Governor Palin and her family spent significantly less than the prior two administrations despite having a much larger family. That is a fact. Clearly frugality was important to her.

On Governor Palin’s Interview with Vogue

AP “FACT”: “Says she tried to talk about national security and energy independence in her interview with Vogue magazine but the interviewer wanted her to pivot from hydropower to high fashion.

THE FACTS are somewhat in dispute. Vogue contributing editor Rebecca Johnson said Palin did not go on about hydropower. ‘She just kept talking about drilling for oil.’”

THE TRUTH: Governor Palin wanted to talk about resource development. The Vogue contributing editor confirms this. Hydropower is one of many alternative sources of energy used in Alaska. “…hydropower to high fashion” is used as a turn of phrase. Are they really this obtuse?

On Governor Palin’s “Ambitions”

AP “FACT”: “Few politicians own up to wanting high office for the power and prestige of it, and in this respect, Palin fits the conventional mold. But ‘Going Rogue’ has all the characteristics of a pre-campaign manifesto, the requisite autobiography of the future candidate.”

THE TRUTH: We didn’t realize writing a book was a declaration of anything other than the desire to tell one’s story.

Oh yeah, and one more thing...

We got a tip from our very own reliable anonymous source. Apparently the McCain campaign racked up legal costs in Alaska and said repeatedly it would pay for them. When the bill was discussed and submitted, according to the campaign's wishes, it was turned down after the election and officials said the campaign would have paid if the campaign had won. Among the dollars - nearly $50,000 for vetting. Charming. Again, we ask you folks to consider this: When has the McCain staffers ever behaved honorably or honestly to this woman? Never.

We'll keep you posted of more facts.

Oh yeah, be sure to read her book. We believe in letting her speak for herself without these McCain "staffers" playing their CYA games. They ran the worst campaign since... well, Bob Dole (nah, Dole was better. At least he had Kemp). The only bright spot during the last election was Sarah Palin. We voted for her, and only for her.
